Secured vs Unsecured Loans: Why Gold Loan Apps Lend More

If you have ever applied for a personal loan and a gold loan on the same day, you already know the difference. The personal loan involves a credit score check, income proof, bank statements, and a waiting period that can stretch to a week. The gold loan? You walk in with jewellery, get it weighed and appraised, and leave with cash. The amounts differ too. For a borrower with an average credit profile, the gold loan almost always puts more money on the table. The reason comes down to one word: collateral.

What makes a loan secured or unsecured

A secured loan is backed by an asset. If you stop paying, the lender can sell that asset to recover its money. Home loans, car loans, gold loans all fall in this category. An unsecured loan has no such backing. The most common examples are personal loans and credit card debt. The lender’s only protection is your promise to repay and whatever legal recourse it can pursue if you don’t.

This distinction shapes everything about how loans work in practice: the interest rate, the sanctioned amount, the speed of approval, and the lender’s appetite for risk. When a bank or NBFC hands you ₹3 lakh against your gold, it knows that even in the worst case, it can auction the pledged jewellery and recover most or all of the principal. When it hands you ₹3 lakh as a personal loan, it is betting entirely on your future income and your willingness to keep paying.

Why collateral changes the math

Lenders are in the business of managing risk, and collateral is the most effective risk reducer available. Consider two borrowers with identical monthly incomes of ₹40,000. One applies for a personal loan. The other pledges 30 grams of gold. Personal loan applicants can get approval for ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh at 14% to 18% interest per annum. Gold loan applicants may get ₹4 lakh or more at 9% to 12% interest based on gold purity and lender’s loan-to-value ratio.

The Reserve Bank of India allows gold loan lenders to lend up to 85% of the gold’s market value for smaller loans, tapering down to 75% for larger amounts. With 22-karat gold trading at around ₹14,000 per gram, 30 grams puts you in the range of ₹3.3 lakh or higher, depending on purity assessment and the applicable loan-to-value slab. Many banks offer even more competitive terms because their cost of funds is lower than that of NBFCs. The point is this: the collateral does the heavy lifting that your credit score does in an unsecured loan, and it does it better.

The credit score gap

For unsecured lending, your CIBIL score is practically the gatekeeper. Below 700, most banks will either reject your application or charge a steep interest rate. Below 650, you are largely shut out of mainstream lending. This creates a huge problem for a large section of Indian borrowers. Many salaried workers in smaller cities, self-employed professionals, and gig economy workers have thin credit files or scores that don’t reflect their actual ability to repay.

Gold loans sidestep this problem almost entirely. A gold loan app typically requires minimal documentation. Some don’t even pull your credit report. The gold itself is the qualification. This is why gold lending has expanded so rapidly in India. Households across the country hold an estimated 25,000 tonnes of gold, much of it sitting idle in lockers and cupboards. Converting even a fraction of that into short-term liquidity makes financial sense for millions of families.

Speed and flexibility favour secured gold lending

Unsecured loan approvals involve verification steps that take time. The lender needs to confirm your employer, check your bank statements for regular salary credits, and sometimes call your references. A gold loan app can cut this process to under an hour in many cases. Digital gold loan platforms operated by established NBFCs, as well as newer fintech players, have made doorstep gold pickup and quick disbursal a standard offering in many Indian cities.

The repayment flexibility also differs. Many gold loans allow you to pay only the interest during the loan tenure and repay the principal at the end. Some offer bullet repayment options. Personal loans, on the other hand, almost always require fixed EMIs from the first month. For someone who needs ₹2 lakh for a medical emergency or a business cash crunch and expects to have the money back in three months, paying only interest during that period is far cheaper than locking into a 24-month EMI schedule on a personal loan.

When unsecured loans still make sense

None of this means unsecured loans are always the worse option. If you have a credit score above 750 and a stable salary, you can get a personal loan at competitive rates without pledging anything. You also avoid the risk of losing your gold if you default. For people who don’t own gold or don’t want to part with family jewellery even temporarily, a personal loan is the obvious route.

There is also a psychological dimension. Pledging gold carries emotional weight in many Indian households. Jewellery is tied to weddings, inheritance, and family identity. Some borrowers will accept a higher interest rate on an unsecured loan rather than hand over their mother’s bangles to a lender.

The bottom line on lending more

Gold loan apps lend more because they can afford to. The collateral decreases the lender’s risk, which translates to higher loan amounts, lower interest rates, and faster approvals. The borrower’s credit history matters less when physical gold is sitting in the lender’s vault. For the large number of Indians who own gold but lack strong credit profiles, this form of secured borrowing is often the most practical way to access meaningful amounts of credit quickly. The trade-off is real, though. You are putting a tangible, often sentimental asset on the line. That deserves careful thought before you tap “apply.”
